You can tell by the hand rendered drawings that this is one of my older projects. The hillside site, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was tricky. The street access was from the top and the usual way to handle the parking would be to put it “up in the air” with a bridge from the street. We wanted the whole house to be low profile – built into the side of the hill. Getting a driveway and turn around was a challenge.
There are 3 levels to the house, all on ground level. This was accomplished by terracing the hillside using retaining walls that go through the house. The turnaround, entry and garage are on the upper level . From the sky-lighted entry you can see down through the dining room and out to the ocean. The living room, dining room and kitchen are on the second level, 4 ft below the entry level. Underneath the living/ dining/ kitchen are two bedrooms, and a covered indoor/outdoor hot tub with an ocean view.
